"If we try to think back to the dim and distant past... what is it that helps us
reconstruct those times, and to picture the lives of those who lived in them? It
is their art... It is thanks to the hand, the companion of the mind, that civilization
has arisen."
—Maria Montessori, The Absorbent Mind

Greetings! My name is Joaquin Barrera and I am
your guitar instructor this semester! We will learn
and practice the fundamentals of classical guitar,
including reading music, identifying chords,
practicing rhythm, and studying guitar techniques.
With 17 years of experience playing guitar, I am
currently a music student at South Texas College.
On top of my studies, I am a part of the STC Guitar
Ensemble, a guitarist and bassist for the Sound of
Spain, one half of The J’s with fellow instructor Mr.
Lopez, and the lead guitarist for Crimson Tides.
Soon, I will be transferring to the University of
Texas Rio Grande Valley, where I plan to earn a
Bachelor’s Degree in Music, with a concentration
on guitar.
Maria García is a dedicated Folklorico dancer with 9 years of experience. She holds a BFA in Dance with a concentration in Folklorico from UTRGV and is an active member of both the BFUTRGV Dance Company and the BFRG Professional Dance Company. Passionate about preserving and sharing Mexican dance traditions, Maria brings her expertise and enthusiasm to teaching and performing, inspiring others with her deep commitment to the art form.
I am from Edinburg and have lived here all my
life. I received my Bachelor of Fine
Arts from University of Pan American in 2005.
My main instrument is piano. I
also am a vocalist and violinist.
I am very passionate about music and enjoy
playing with chamber music groups,
performing at many venues and I enjoy teaching
today’s youths the joy of music.
My hobbies are cooking, gardening, playing
music, spending time with loved ones
and traveling to the hill country and beach.
I look forward to working with your children!
Welcome! I'm Mr. Lopez, and I'll be your guitar
instructor for this semester. We'll cover the
fundamental skills of classical guitar, including
reading sheet music, chords, rhythm, and more,
to help you develop as a classical guitarist. I am
currently a student at South Texas College, where
I am involved in the guitar ensemble and Sounds
of Spain. Additionally, I perform with The J's
classical guitar duet alongside Mr. Barrera at
corporate functions and private events. With over
7 years of experience playing guitar, I have
developed a deep passion for the instrument. I
will soon graduate with my associate degree from
STC and plan to pursue a bachelor's degree at
UTRGV.
Recently graduated from UTRGV,
Matthew Guerra received a BFA in
Dance, with a concentration in
Mexican Folk Dance. He has studied
Folklorico for the past 9 years. He has
performed on renowned stages, such
as the Ameson River theater, and with
top artists such as Mariachi Vargas.
